The History of Maine Canoe Routes

Giaime Mameli, a student at the College of the Atlantic, put together an interesting infographic/ebook talking about the history of the canoe in Maine, and outlining traditional and modern canoe routes in Maine.

Over the past several years, I've been taking canoe trips in Maine. In part, for the great wilderness canoe camping options, but also because the rich canoeing history and culture in Maine rivals my own home state of Minnesota!

One of my trips to Maine included poling the Machias River!

I first went to Maine to see the woods and waters and to learn the obscure art of canoe poling. I returned to challenge myself by taking the Registered Maine Guide test. I keep coming back because I love paddling Maine's wild rivers, and because I've met so many passionate, interesting, and fun Maine-iac canoeists!

I strongly recommend checking out Maine's rivers in person--it's a unique experience that any canoeist will love!
